As a mom with two children that have attended Heights Christian Schools, since our oldest was in third grade, I’ve been blessed to be part of a beautiful community of believers and witness how Heights Christian Schools offers an academically rigorous education, taught from a distinctively Christian worldview, in a safe, nurturing environment for my children.

I’ve read studies that show children who receive a Christian education perform better than their counterparts. Tools such as critical thinking, values, and principles that are God-centered equip and enable our students to achieve their fullest potential. Every aspect of their daily lessons is infused with biblical and spiritual applications. While many may think that a private, Christian education is out of reach, upon closer scrutiny, it may be more affordable than you thought. And when you recognize it as an investment in your child’s future, it is well worth every penny.

Growing up the oldest of three children, raised by a single mom, we lived in a modest apartment in the heart of a large metropolis in the Midwest. My Mom worked multiple jobs in order for us to survive, and while we got by, there were rarely any extras.  Like so many parents, after getting married and having kids, I wanted a better life for them. My husband and I worked tirelessly to provide a nice home, in a safe community. We planned family vacations and enjoyed many niceties that I had not had as a child. Interestingly enough, for several years, I never imagined a private education for our children. Having grown up in public schools, my husband and I understood that private education was very expensive, and not a luxury we could afford… or so we thought!

Our oldest, Tyler was in 3rd grade, and our daughter Lizzy would enter Kindergarten the following September when the pandemic of March 2020 hit. Schools closed down and distance learning was introduced. But, Tyler, did not respond well to distance learning. He was easily distracted, and often off-task. Soon, it became necessary for me to sit alongside him for most of the lessons to keep him engaged. As I did, I was horrified with some of the content that was being taught to our eight-year-old! How had I never noticed this before? Lizzy had some learning challenges, and I did not want her kindergarten experience to be online! But what choice did we have?

In our community, there was a small Christian school. It was only a few blocks from our home, but honestly, I hadn’t paid much attention to it. One day, as I was driving home from the market, I noticed children on the school playground; the school was open, providing in-person instruction! The very next day, I scheduled an appointment and went to meet with the Principal. I toured the campus, met a few of the teachers, learned about the curriculum and special services and offerings. Immediately, something changed in me. Suddenly, I no longer viewed a private, Christian education as a luxury that we could not afford; it was an investment that we had to make. It was a choice that we had never even considered, and now it was so obviously the only right choice for our family. And so, we enrolled both children.

Two years later, our children are flourishing! Within this close-knit community that has become family, they are thriving! Their teachers love them, and they love their teachers. They have grown tremendously academically and spiritually. They are happy and confident. Lizzy is an already an avid reader and she loves school. Tyler excels in math and science, and discovered he loves to sing so he joined the student worship team. Both have grown in their faith, and their understanding of God’s love, grace and salvation.

Over the course of the past two years, we continue to be amazed by the small changes in spending that we made in order to afford school tuition. We have also been blessed by the needs-based tuition assistance program offered by Heights. And, because we are always telling friends about Heights Christian Schools, we have also been blessed by the referral program. For those who may think private Christian education is out of the question, we often say, “That’s what we thought, too! But God made a way, and today, our kids are happy, healthy, successful students who love learning, and love God. We are so thankful for Heights Christian Schools.”
